Great article. Shows how important and relevant the study of history is. History is interesting to learn for its own sake, but can also help us appreciate how things have developed over time and how they are likely to go in the future i.e. the old adage about those who don’t learn the lessons of history being doomed to repeat it.

History is also strongly tied up in culture and politics as well, including national identity or national grievances. These are important to understand as well, particularly in attempting to defuse conflict / bring people together. E.g. we are still grappling with our history in Australia between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples e.g. how to interpret and come to terms with / account for stolen generations, frontier wars and so on.
